Overall I had no qualms with this article. I didn't feel the writer was leading me down a rosy path that leads to a fall, but I was a little taken aback at the language use by executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri. Being the executive director of a law group, albeit pro bono group of lawyers, I would have thought Brenda Jones would have understood the power of words to make one seem intelligent and authoratative, or reveal one to be the opposite. I guess not when she told the paper the group looking to ban affirmative action were,"co-opting the language of Martin Luther King." I was left scratching my head wondering whether she meant MLK jr, or the german monk that help begin the protestant movement. Was she taking for granted that we all knew to whom she was refering, I'm sure more than a few of us know the german monk primarily and the civil activist as a matter of necesity.
My take on this subject is I'm against affirmative action as it stands. I think a person must be chosen by the skill set they can provide and not by color of their skin. I don't think Martin Luther King, jr. that is, would see today's affirmative action as a leveling tool. I think he would see it as a different form of segregation.
